13 Aug CHANGING OF THE GUARD; Agnew Wines’ Announces NEW Chief Winemaker
Vintage 2019 at Agnew Wines, owners of wine brands Audrey Wilkinson, Pooles Rock, and Cockfighter’s Ghost marks the 10th and final vintage of our Chief Winemaker, Jeff Byrne. Simultaneously, we are enormously proud and pleased to be announcing our very own Xanthe Hatcher as the new Chief Winemaker for Agnew Wines portfolio of brands.
“Excitement tempered by trepidation describes my feeling on being appointed Chief Winemaker for Agnew Wines. Jeff Byrne leaves behind a robust operation and congenial workplace culture. His mentorship is invaluable, equipping me for the future challenges and opportunities in the role. With immense gratitude, the team and I will continue to realise the Agnew family’s vision through the great wines and experiences we produce” Xanthe Hatcher
Xanthe commenced at Agnew Wines in 2012 and was selected as ‘Finalist’ for The Wine Society’s Young Winemaker of The Year Award. In 2016 Xanthe’s talents were recognised by her peers, being honoured with the Hunter Valley Wine Industry’s Alasdair Sutherland Scholarship. Her ability to produce highly sought after and contemporary wine styles is not least demonstrated by her first vintage as Winemaker of Cockfighters Ghost Single Vineyard wines where she was a finalist for the ‘Jimmy Watson’, as well as winning multiple trophies and gold medals for this new range.
“Over the past few years Xanthe has established herself as one of the shining lights of winemaking in the Hunter Valley and Australia more broadly – so the decision to offer her the role of Chief Winemaker was both immediate and obvious. We have every confidence that she will seamlessly continue the great work commenced by Jeff and will ensure that Agnew Wines continues to grow. We look forward to Xanthe putting her mark on the wines we are yet to make!” James Agnew, Agnew Wines – General Manager
Official handover took place on June 30, 2019.
