Cockfighter’s Ghost Cellar Door Hosts Pop-up Sculpture Exhibition

Cockfighter’s Ghost Cellar Door is currently showcasing six new statues from artist Harrie Fasher, the award-winning artist who brought to life the 2 metre tall permanent statue of Cockfighter’s Ghost which sits in the garden outside the Cellar Door.

“Our statue of Cockfighter’s Ghost is loved by all of our Cellar Door visitors”, said Sales and Marketing Manager Rohan Beale. “We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to showcase more of Harrie Fasher’s beautiful works honouring the horse, which bears significant meaning for our brand.”

The sculptures will be on display for the month of June as part of the Art & Wine Trail during Hunter Valley Wine and Food Month. Cockfighter’s Ghost Cellar Door is also offering a Signature Australian Wine Tasting Experience, exploring two of the Hunter Valley’s most iconic varieties – Shiraz and Semillon. Visitors can taste young vs. aged vintages of premium and Reserve ranges, accompanied by a matching cheese board. Contact Cockfighter’s Ghost Cellar Door to book.

Who is Cockfighter’s Ghost?

Legend states that in 1835, Governor Macquarie sent explorers to find routes to open up the Hunter. One wild and windy night, their strongest horse – Cockfighter – drowned bravely trying to get his rider across the raging waters of a flooded creek.

When convict gangs were later sent to construct a bridge over what is now known as Cockfighter’s Creek, they swore that on stormy nights you would see Cockfighter’s Ghost galloping free across the countryside. To this day it is reported that Cockfighter’s Ghost still haunts the vineyards planted on the banks of this creek
